In what can be seen as an attempt douse the raging controversy over BJP leaders' recent remarks on Taj Mahal, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday visited the 17th-century monument in Agra. Adityanath is the first BJP CM of UP to visit the Taj Mahal. The UP Chief Minister weilded broom at the Western Gate of Taj Mahal and took part in a cleanliness drive. According to Adityanath's programme, he will stay for half an hour at the graves of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal and visit the Shah Jahan park nearby. He will also lay foundation for the development of a tourist pathway from Taj Mahal to Agra Fort. His visit comes almost a week after BJP MLA Sangeet Som stirred a controversy by saying that the Taj Mahal was built by traitors and was a 'blot' on Indian culture.
